Typography Comes Alive

The major reason why I decided to take a typography class was that for years, I came across people that could look at a sign or marketing material and they'd yell out what font family was used. For example, we'd be in a discussion about books and book covers and someone would randomly shout out that it, "was a bold choice to use New Wingdings Gothic *, when it is only available in capitals and they could have fit the entire subheading on the cover if they'd used PlayUnfair Bold*."  It seemed like they had some weird archaic knowledge, to be able to not only point out the ones they used but to also suggest an option that would work better. Being a fan of weird and lesser known things, I wanted a piece of this powerful voodoo for myself.  Turns out, it's not so weird or arcane and being a typophile is nothing like the X-Files. We are surrounded by type everyday and there are very specific reasons why say, a "Stop" sign uses Highway Gothic or our federa...

After two semesters, I'm finally learning that it would be better to write in a dedicated DDP space. I fought it and whined about it. I now have 18 units, 6 of which are DDP and  it's time to do it. That means in the coming days/weeks I'll need to play Blogger designer again, something I haven't done for over a decade. That adds to the load, but is okay. This week in Typograhpy, we're learning the basic terms, some of which I knew. I've often been astounded by Typophiles and how they can look at any random scrap of type and identify it. Soon, perhaps, I'll be able to do it too! Thanks to the Imaging class, I can now open a file, determine its stats, and most importantly, fill in areas when cropping and realigning has left white spaces. Will I be able to remember this? No idea. From what I learned last semester, I've already been playing a lot on my own. See an example below.  I'm already thrilled.
